I recently (early July) booked a guided float on the James for my son and I for smallmouth and got Evan as our guide. In short, we had a really great time, caught a ton of fish, and I was just very impressed with Evan as a guide and felt like giving some positive feedback. For a younger adult, Evan is very mature and presents himself the same as a guide with a decade of experience. He inspired confidence, was calm and professional, was clear with the meeting location and time, and showed up early and prepared. The boat (the "Green Machine”) was awesome - we saw another crew out on the river and I was glad to be on our relatively elevated boat vs. deeper in the hull like theirs. And the “lean bar” up front makes for just perfect and easy casting. Evan clearly knew the water and towards the mid-part of the day, took us along a few mile stretch of the river where we were just crushing the fish, at times doubling up where both my son and I had fish on the boat at the same time. Evan fairly quickly picked the perfect flies for us (poppers) and we really didn’t change flies all day - another sign of a great guide! He was careful with the boat and inspired confidence and control in some of the rockier sections, again like a more seasoned guide, very professional. Lunch was simple but great, he provided plenty of sunscreen and water which we used a lot, and even offered us finger stripping guards, which were a game changer - both my son and I lost ours in the water and he didn’t even flinch (I will be giving him replacements). Anyway, to be honest I wasn’t expecting much for this trip, I just wasn’t sure what to expect and we had just come back from fishing in Montana so our baseline was pretty high. Also, we had initially booked a trip on the Shenandoah but the water was so low and Evan recommended the James - I'm glad we listened - my expectations were exceeded, we had a great time, learned a lot, and caught a ton of fish including a few huge ones.
